Carrion de Los Condes

We were very impressed with the Albergue but when people started getting up at 5am there wasn't much sleep after that. There was no breakfast so we were away by 7.45
Quite a climb out of the village, about 5 kms on a metal road

But an incredible road mostly down hill to Castrojeriz. AND a good tail wind .

Just before the town we pass the convent of San Anton. Set up by the same King Alfonso in 1146, it was to cater for the needs of the pilgrims and to try and fix 'San Antons Fire'. A nasty disease of the Middle Ages caused by a fungus that grew on the rye used in bread making . It caused fire like symptoms in their limbs and eventually toes and fingers to drop off.

Stopped here for breakfast. It's Sunday morning but cafes are open for the passing pilgrims.

Puente Fitero. This half of the bridge was rebuilt in the 18th century, but the other end is still in use from the 16th century ! 😳 wow

Canal de Castillo at Fromista
Once a main transport canal , now used just for irrigation

This section of the Camino is missed out by some tour groups as it's flat and uninteresting. That's at walking speed.
We loved it. With a tail wind we covered the dead straight 20kms to Carrion de Los Condes in less than an hour.

Pretty little town and a lovely room with a courtyard for 45€
