Hornillos del Camino

The plan for today was to get to Burgos via San Juan de Ortega. A village on the top of Mt Oca. Luckily for us we were sent the blog of someone who had walked it and commented on how steep it was even on foot.
Ok, we'll take the road .

It wasn't as scary as we first thought. Plenty of room on the verge. Notice the snow markers ? And oh boy , the downhill trip was magnificent.
We turned off the N road at the bottom of the hill to get back on the Camino at Ages.

A good place for coffee. The old chap was watering his garden from the horse trough.
In 1135 a certain King, Alfonso V11, opened up a route through here to Burgos as a safe passage for pilgrims . Even then it was a huge part of their economy. Consider this ... At that time there were over 250,000 pilgrims passing through there. Far more than today even. This cafe is typical of the town. Oak frames with stone and plaster infill

The town church, Santa Eulalia de Merida, built at the end of the 16th century.

This guy was more interested in our sheepskin seat covers. They attract a lot of attention .

No it's not a real estate agent. This area was a 'prehistoric man 'settlement and there's a museum here.

Ahhh! Once again the Camino turns to a rough track with no warning for cyclists not to take it.

Finally Burgos. Superb cycle ways. Unfortunately my battery has gone flat so I can't get any photos. Shame because this is one of the most beautiful cities we've seen. Our plan is to get just out of the city about Tardajos. πŸ‘
Oops, the hostels were booked out so we had to go an extra 12 kms to Hornillos del Camino and even then all we could get was an Albergue.

I'll let you know how we slept . Luckily there's only 10 in our room😬
I must admit there's a great comraderie amongst the travellers
